Beaver Mountain

To get to Beaver Mountain follow Highway 567 south of North Cobalt to the Matabitchuan Powerhouse. Park near the Nastawgan Trails kiosk. Walk southeast uphill a hundred meters and look for the O. T. H. Trail on your left. The portage trail is also the start of the trail. E

Enjoy the easy going riverside trail before the climb which is 500 feet above river level. The narrow hiking trail meets up with the wider hydro line access trail. Turn left and continue uphill. When the trail levels out look on your left for the side trail to the summit which is marked with blue blazes. As you go uphill look to your left for the trail leading to the west lookout. It's a great place for lunch. Continue along the trail and you will come to a small abandoned communication tower. If you look around you will also see parts from the old fire tower. Go east 100 meters to the east lookout which gives you views north and south of Lake Temiskaming. If the west lookout was too cool the east lookout is often a less windy lunch spot. Continue downhill, and as you return you have the option of following the hydro access trail back to the start instead of the riverside trail. It is a 6 kilometer round trip with some beautiful pine forest. The rating for this hike is strenuous/difficult!
