Ottawa-Temiskaming Highland Trail

This is a very rugged 142 kilometer trail starting in Latchford on Highway 11 and finishing in Thorne on Highway 63. Both community's have bus service to them. Traveling south from Latchford there is summer time road access on the Roosevelt Road north end, Roosevelt Road south end, Matabitchuan Powerhouse south of Highway 567, Rabbit Lake Road, and Mcclarens Bay Road. Only the road to the Matabitchuan Powerhouse is cleared in the winter.

It is recommended that hikers start from the north which is more traveled and easier than the south. The south end of the trail has many steep hills and sections of side hill walking.

Your pack weight should be 25 to 35 pounds. Hikers that attempt the trail with 50 pound packs do not succeed.

A young couple with a 15 month old child hiked the trail from the Rabbit Lake Road to Latchford in 8 days. A 65 year old did the entire trail in 46 hours and 47 minutes.

Look for separate write ups describing weekend and day hikes of parts of the O.T.H Trail.  Links to the right of this page break the trail into major sections as dictated by vehicle access
